Rapper Kid Cudi Checks into Rehab for Depression, Anxiety, and Suicidal Thoughts
Rapper Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi checked into rehab last week for depression, anxiety, and suicidal urges. The hip-hop star shared the news in an emotional letter posted to his Facebook page, revealing “I am not at peace. I haven’t been since you’ve known me. If I didn’t come here, I would’ve done something to myself.” Cudi has been open about his past struggles with drugs and depression. In a July radio interview with Pharrell and Scott Vener, Cudi discussed how his depression led to his cocaine abuse. “I’ll tell you the truth, it’s what drove me to drugs,” he said. “I was like, man, I’m either going to kill myself or I’m going to do some drugs. And I want to live, so…” On his decision to enter rehab and take control over his depression and anxiety the rapper stated “I’m tired of being held back in my life. I deserve to have peace. I deserve to be happy and smiling. Why not me? I guess I give so much of myself to others I forgot that I need to show myself some love too. I think I never really knew how… Its time I fix me.” Cudi’s attempt to self-medicate with cocaine is an extremely common trend amongst those struggling with mental health disorders. A co-occurring disorder, also known as dual diagnosis, is when a patient suffers from both a mental illness and a problematic substance abuse/addiction condition. Co-occurring disorders usually develop as a result of attempts to self medicate mental disorders, as with Cudi. Many times, individuals do not receive the full help they need because their mental disorder is overlooked in the addiction treatment process. However, it is crucial to treat both conditions simultaneously, because both conditions play off one another. At Silicon Beach Outpatient Center, we have successfully treated many patients suffering with a dual diagnosis with our intensive outpatient co-occurring disorder treatment. With our individualized treatment plans, we know from day one, which patients fall into the dual diagnosis category. With the proper treatment and therapy, we know that our patients can gain their freedom back from addiction and mental health disorders.
